Abstract

1317527 Hydrated alumina MITSUBISHI CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 July 1971 33123/71 Heading ClA Pure hydrated alumina is prepared by passing CO 2 into an aqueous solution of sodium aluminate (prepared, e.g. by dissolving bauxite ore, hydrated alumina or aluminium in NaOH solution) to form a slurry of hydrated alumina, washing the slurry with water to elute the sodium (e.g. to lower the pH to less than 12), heating the slurry to above 100‹ C. under a superatmospheric pressure of CO 2 (e.g. gauge pressure of 10-20 Kg/cm.<SP>2</SP>) and then separating the hydrated alumina from the slurry. By varying the heating temperature different forms of alumina are produced, e.g. bayerite is formed by heating to 100-170‹ C. and boehmite by heating to 180-300‹ C.
