Abstract
1481355 Sound insulation DUNLOP Ltd 13 March 1975 [27 March 1974 8 Oct 1974] 13548/74 and 43479/74 Heading F2X [Also in Division B5] A composite noise reduction system for the absorption of frequencies of 200 Hz or less comprises (a) a vibration prone substrate; (b) an interlayer made from a foam material having a thickness of from 2 to 20 mm. and being adhered to the substrate over substantially the whole of that surface of the foam material adjacent to the substrate, and (c) a solid counter layer having a mass in the range of 4 to 15 kg./m.<SP>2</SP> and being adhered to the interlayer over substantially the whole of that surface of the foam material remote from that adhered to the substrate, in which the bulk stiffness (defined as being the Young's modulus at 4% compression) of the interlayer has a value in the range 0À5 to 3À5 kn./m.<SP>2</SP>. The specified substrate is a steel bar. The foam interlayer may be organic, e.g. styrenebutadiene latex foam or polyurethane foam or inorganic, e.g. of glass, silica, alumina, zirconia, silicous slag or asbestos. The counterlayer may be a sheet material, e.g. lead or rolled asbestos fabric; alternatively, a polychloroprene rubber, an uncured ethylene-propylene terpolymer, rubber or a plasticised polyvinyl chloride loaded with a filler, e.g. barytes, clay or molybdenum powder may be used. Bonding may be effected by an adhesive, e.g. protein glue.
