Abstract

1481022 Removing material from surface of moving strip DAVY-LOEWY Ltd 1 May 1975 [7 May 1974] 20015/74 Heading C7E [Also in Division B3] Material is removed from the surface of a moving strip by applying a gaseous fluid to said surface by a pneumatic pad closely spaced from the surface and having a plurality of discharge openings directed thereat, the supplied fluid escaping laterally between the strip surface and the pad to thereby drive material from the surface, the pad being movable towards and away from the strip surface in dependence on fluid pressure to maintain the spacing of said pad from said surface. Typically the process is applied to removal of rolling oil from rolled strip, and the pad may immediately precede or follow the rolling mill. As shown, strip S, moving out of paper, passes between 2 members 20, each having orifices 22 adjacent strip S, the orifices being fed via tubes 24, 26 and headers 28 and 30, with high pressure fluid, e.g. air; the outer tubes 26 may have taps 38 which can be shut-off when treating narrow strip. Upper pad 20 can move freely vertically by co-operation of pins 44 with elongate slots 40; lower member 20 is fixed at 48, and thus the location of both strip S and upper pad 20 is determined and maintained by fluid pressure. Pads 20 may lie at an angle to the strip, or be V-shaped to facilitate sweeping of material to one or both edges respectively.
