The pattern wheels 10, 12, 14 are used to knit three colour patterns, each wheel being associated with a particular colour in each course. A blister switch 272 may be opened to maintain magnet 85 deenergised when button 176 is depressed and is used to produce blister patterns. The shaft of motor 132 carries cams 134, 136 which operate switches 202, 204 respectively to maintain the motor energised when the actuating button is released and to stop the motor after one revolution. The pattern wheels are indexed by pawls 86, 88, 90 on members 34, 36, 38 driven through linkages by a crank 128 on the motor shaft. Cam plates 280, 242, 244 assist in the deflection of the jacks to non-actuating position.
