Abstract

1480802 Change-speed gear; friction clutches DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 25 Sept 1975 [15 Oct 1974] 44705/74 Headings F2D and F2C A clutch plate 13 movable axially to couple either of pulleys 7, 8 to a shaft 1, e.g. a tape recorder capstan drive shaft, to cause the latter to be driven at low or high speed is actuated by means such as electromagnets 17, 18 coacting with an armature 16 and is held in engagement with the selected pulley by permanent magnetic means to avoid the necessity for continuous power consumption by the electromagnets. Each pulley may have a facing 11, 12 of magnetically loaded elastomer and the plate 13 may be similarly faced or made of ferrous material. The electromagnets are spaced such as to avoid physical contact with the armature when the plate 13 is in engagement with either pulley. As shown, the plate 13 is held against rotation relatively to the shaft by a pin 14 and is actuated by a rod 15, but a modification is referred to in which the rod 15 is dispensed with and the shaft and plate are moved axially by the electromagnets.
