Abstract

1480734 Fuels; lubricants ETHYL COOPER Ltd 17 July 1974 [26 July 1973] 35732/73 Headings C5F and C5G [Also in Division C3] Lubricating oil and fuel compositions comprise as ashless dispersants amides of alkylphenoxy substituted aliphatic carboxylic acids having at least 50 carbon atoms in the alkyl substituents, or derivatives of said amides derived from polyamines wherein the amides have been further reacted with carboxylic acids to form salts, amides and imidazoles, condensed with aldehydes and ketones, or with aldehydes and phenols to form Mannich bases, or with alkenyl succinic acids and anhydrides. The oils may be mineral oils or synthetic ester oils, e.g. dioctyl sebacate, and the compositions may also comprise conventional additives. Examples describe dispersants which are reaction products of alkylphenoxyacetates derived from polyisobutenyl phenols, polypropenyl phenols, polyisobutenyl - o - methylphenol, thio bis polyisobutenyl phenol and 2-chloro-4-poly-isobutenyl phenol with tetraethylene pentamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine, mixed polyalkylene polyamines, pentaethylene hexamine, dipropylene triamine, ethylene diamine, 3-dimethylamino propylamine, 1,4-bis aminopropyl piperazine, 2-aminoethyl ethanolamine, trismethylol methylamine and a reaction product of tetraethylene pentamine and dicyandiamide; and reaction products of polyisobutenyl phenoxyacetamides of tetraethylene pentamine with benzaldehyde, formalin and polyisobutenyl phenol, isostearic acid, and polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride. The products are tested in mineral oil compositions comprising conventional metal sulphonate detergents, viscosity index improvers and antioxidant/antiwear additives.
