Abstract

1480605 Coal slurry sump in a mine CONTINENTAL OIL CO 8 Nov 1974 [15 April 1974] 48525/74 Heading B1D [Also in Division F1] A slurry of coal and water is delivered from several coal faces into a sump which extends along parts of at least two tunnels at right angles to each other and as shown comprises a main trench 11 and two side trenches 21, 22, each having vertical sides and longitudinally sloping floors so that concentrated slurry settles towards the deep end of the main trench, whence it is extracted by a pump 37 and delivered to the surface. A weir 32 cuts off the shallow end of trench 11 to form a reservoir into which water flows from the main part of the sump, this water being recycled to the coal faces by line 40, pump 36 and lines 42, 43. Make-up water is fed to reservoir 30 by line 55. Pumps 36 and 37 are located in a pump room 35 accessible from the main tunnel by manway 47. The trenches may be roofed over by beams or grids 27, 28 and are lined with concrete.
