Abstract
1480584 Refractory composition RESIL PROCESSES Ltd 19 July 1974 [4 July 1973] 31872/73 Heading ClJ [Also in Division C3] A refractory composition, suitable for the manufacture of riser sleeves, hot tops, feeder heads or other refractory shapes, comprises 4-10 wt. per cent comminuted paper, 0À1 to 0À6 wt. per cent flow-improving agent, and up to 95À9 wt. per cent light weight aggregate which is particulate, has a packing density 0À4 to 0À55 gm./cc. and a melting point in excess of 1600‹ C., the flow-improving agent ensuring at least satisfactory flow properties for the aggregate when it is in the form of a slurry. The flowimproving agent may be a copolymer of polyacrylic acid with polyacrylamide. The paper may be derived from one or more pulps selected from a chemically processed pulp made from soft woods, a soda pulp made from hard woods or a pulp made from rag fibres. The composition may contain up to 10 wt. per cent uncomminuted waste paper. The composition may also contain a sniphite lye binder and/or synthetic resin binder. Particle size gradings for the aggregate are described. The examples describe the production of riser sleeves from (1) comminuted Kraft (Registered Trade Mark) paper, comminuted waste paper, lightweight aggregate, and flow-improving agent, from (2) comminuted waster paper, alumina dross, lightweight aggregate, resin binder, sulphite lye and flow-improving agent and from (3) ceramic fibre (Triton Kaowool-both Registered Trade Marks), starch, flow-improving agent, and comminuted Kraft paper by formation of slurries and moulding in dies.
