Abstract

1480583 Temperature measurement using fluorescence REYROLLE PARSONS Ltd 2 July- 1974 [2 July 1973] 31466/73 Heading G1A A temperature measuring arrangement for a moving body consists of a phosphor strip applied to said body, a light source for making the phosphor fluoresce and detection means for measuring the variation of the fluorescent light as dependent on the body temperature. A turbogenerator comprises stator housing 11, inner stator frame 12 and, with winding slots 14, stator core 13 separated by gap 16 from rotor 15 with a field winding. A circumferential strip of suitable phosphor, suspended in transparent lacquer is painted on rotor 15, leaving a calibration gap in the strip. Ultraviolet source 17 consists of 500 W mercury vapour lamp 18, concave mirror 18a, housing 21, lens 21a, heat filter 22, ultraviolet transmitting filter 21 and control phosphor 19 with ultraviolet transmitting filter 20. Battery 23 feeds stabilizer 24 and lamp ignition circuit 25 through changeover switch 23a. Battery charger/standby supply 26 is provided. Phosphor 19 has a constant response within the lamp housing temperature range and is connected by fibre light guide 28 to photodiode 29 maintained at constant temperature in control circuit 27 and its signal automatically or manually controls the lamp current through cir- cuit 24. The detection means comprises photo- multiplier 30, oscilloscope or meter 31, and stabilized supply 32. The ultraviolet light and the returning visible light from the fluorescing phosphor on rotor 15 are transmitted by fibre light guides 33, 34 in a common sheath. Photo-diode 29 and photo-multiplier 30 have green filters.
