1458594 Photo-electric measurement of diameter SCHWERMASCHINENBAU-KOMBINAT ERNST THALMANN MAGDEBURG VEB 2 May 1974 [24 August 1973] 19396/74 Heading G1A The diameter of e.g. a sheathed cable 13 emerging from an extruder is measured by photoelectric apparatus comprising a source of light 1 connected in a photo-electric detector circuit to ensure constant light output intensity, a lens system 6, 8 providing parallel light in the zone of the cable and focusing the unobstructed light on to a detector 14, which is provided with circuitry designed to reduce long term variations in the detector output signal due to ageing of components. The lamp 1 is monitored by a photo-cell 3 via diaphragm 2 and the detector output compared at 4 with a standard value provided by 20, the lamp current being varied as necessary via integrating amplifier 5. The main photo-cell output is compared at 9 with a standard value and monitored by indicator 11 via amplifier 10. A feedback circuit is provided which comprises current generator 17, integrating amplifier 16 and voltage dividing resistors 15 and operates in two modes. In one, with switch 18 open, a strong negative feedback loop is provided via generator 17. In the other, with 18 closed and 19 open, the amplifier 16 is also brought into circuit and the circuit then responds preferentially to short term variations.
