1480433 Coated bolts and nuts; piston coatings AMERACE CORP 13 Jan 1975 [23 Jan 1974] 1380/75 Headings F2H and F2T To prevent galling or seizing of a pair of relatively slidable stainless steel members, e.g. a bolt and a nut, bearing surfaces, piston rings, piston-cylinder interfaces, either one member 50 is coated with one layer 54 of a first metal having an elastic modulus greater than or equal to 20 Î 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i. and the other member 52 is coated with an outer layer 58 of an inorganic lubricant over an inner layer 56 of a second metal having an elastic modulus less than or equal to 17 Î 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i. or one member 38 is coated with four superposed layers, the innermost first layer 42 being a first metal having an elastic modulus greater than or equal to 20 Î 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i., the second layer 44 being a second metal having an elastic modulus less than or equal to 17 Î 10<SP>6</SP> p.s.i., the third layer 46 being an inorganic lubricant, and the fourth, outermost layer 48 being an organic lubricant. The first metal is selected from the group: platinum, manganese, cobalt, nickel, chromium, beryllium, rhodium, molybdenum, tungsten, ruthenium, indium, and alloys thereof and is preferably nickel. The second metal is selected from the group: palladium, copper, gold, silver, zirconium, cadmium, tin, lead, and alloys thereof, and is preferably copper. The inorganic lubricant may be molybdenum disulphide or graphite or a mixture thereof. The organic lubricant may be cetyl alcohol, lauric acid, or a suitable wax. Fig. 3 shows a lock-nut 26 having one end 30 crimped to an elliptical form. The nut is retained in a channel 34 by a clip 36. The nut threads have the four layer coating described above, for use with an uncoated stainless steel bolt. In another embodiment, Fig. 1, not shown, a bolt thread has a nickel coating and a nut thread has a copper coating with a top layer of molybdenum disulphide. Either or both threads may have a final coating of an organic lubricant. The nut is a self-locking nut with a nylon ring insert.
