Abstract

1479815 Bearings NIKKISO CO Ltd 20 Aug 1975 34530/75 Heading F2A [Also in Division G1] A shaft 10 (Fig. 2) rotatably mounted by bearings in a housing 24 is provided at one end with an axially extending bore 12 to receive a bearing wear detecting device 14; the bore 12 has a large portion 25 (Fig. 3) of greater crosssectional area spaced from the end of the shaft by a small portion 22 of reduced cross-sectional area, a first shoulder 25a being defined between the two portions and the axial extent of the large portion being limited by a second shoulder 25b, and the detecting device includes a hermetically sealed pipe 16 containing a fluid and having at one end an enlarged sensing portion 18 which may be axially passed through the small portion 22 of the bore, the arrangement being such that excessive radial and/or thrust wear of the bearings causes the internal surfaces of the bore 12 to wear and rupture the sensing portion 18, thereby causing a pressure change within the pipe which shows up on an indicator 26. The axially extending bore may be provided in a nut threadedly received on the shaft. The cross-sectional shape of the bore and/ or the sensing portion of the pipe may be elliptical, rectangular, or polygonal. In a further embodiment (Fig. 12), the detecting device comprises an indicating part 28 provided at its rear with the indicator 26, and a detecting part 30 provided at its front with the sensing portion 18, each part having integrally formed therewith a joining pipe 32, 34, the joining pipes being telescopically and hermetically engaged when in use, the arrangement being such that when the parts are slidably moved together the pressure therein is increased.
