1479432 Treating tanks of inflammable liquid LISNAVE-ESTALEIROS NAVAIS DE LISBOA SARL 11 June 1974 25879/74 Heading A5A A safety device for automatically compensating for losses of inert gas in a tank containing combustible liquid, in particular oil-tanker tanks, comprises a source of inert gas in supply pipe 3, e.g. from the engine exhaust gases, communicating with the tank 1, an emergency source of inert gas under pressure in bottles 12, a discharge pipe communicating with the tank and containing a valve 5 which opens to let air into the tank when the pressure therein drops below a given pressure, emergency valves 12 operated by a pressure drop detector 11 communicating with the tank 1 by supply pipe 3, which valves are opened to emit inert gas to the tank 1 when the pressure therein falls to just above the given pressure referred to above and pressure regulating valves 4 located between valves 12 and the tank 1 for controlling the flow of inert gas from the bottles 12 to the tank 1, the valves 4 closing automatically at a pressure slightly below the given pressure, while remaining open above that given pressure, so that, during the discharge operation, the valve 4 will automatically close to prevent discharge of the emergency source of inert gas. There may be a plurality of tanks 1 connected to 3 in parallel and preferably the emergency valves 12 are opened in succession in response to a signal from 11.
