Abstract

1479298 Optical communication system CORNING GLASS WORKS 4 July 1974 [5 July 1973 (2)] 29653/74 Heading G1A [Also in Division G2] An optical communication system comprises a plurality of transmission lines each connected at one end to a corresponding one of an equal number of stations and at the other end to a common passive coupler, which receives from any said transmission line, signals, of which it transfers a portion to the rest of the transmission lines. Each station has a source and a detector connected via bundles of optical light fibres and a mixer rod to its transmission line. The passive coupler of Fig. 4 comprises a cylindrical transparent mixer rod 61 clad with layer 62 of lower refractive index and reflective coating 65 and with its end-faces, 63, 64, polished and perpendicular to its axis. Support means 67 positions a bundle 66 of transmission lines parallel to this axis with their ends separated from face 64 only by fluid 68 which equals the refractive indices of 61 and 66 or matches them if they are unequal. The numerical aperture of rod 61 at least equals that of a line of 66. So that light from any line of 66, of acceptance half angle # c when connected, is reflected to any other line 66, the length L m of rod 61 of diameter d is given by The passive coupler of Fig. 5 in housing 65 has mixer rods 72-77 inter-connected by optical waveguides 88 and receiving transmission lines 81-86.
