Abstract

1478358 Locating sound sources FRIED KRUPP GmbH 7 Aug 1974 [8 Sept 1973] 34869/74 Heading G1G [Also in Division G4] Apparatus for locating the source of water-borne sound comprises a hydrophone system carrying a north-seeking magnet 8; the hydrophone system may comprise hydrophones 6 mounted on a plate 5 and is electrically connected by wires 10 to a switch box 3 which is supported from a buoy 1 by an elastic cable 2; the hydrophone system is arranged to rotate freely, being supported for example on a point bearing 7 carried by a housing 4 connected to the switch box 3. The apparatus may be dropped into the sea with the plate 5 connected to the switch box 3 by a locking device 16, which is automatically released to allow the plate 5 to rotate freely. Signals from the hydrophones are transmitted through cable 12 to transmitter 15. Damping blades 17, impedence transformers 19, and buoyancy members 23 my also be provided. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the plate 5 is attached to the switch box 3 by a polyamide cord.
