Abstract

1478065 Cold joining parts ELPAG AG CHUR 11 July 1974 [16 July 1973] 30803/74 Headings B3H and B3A In a method of cold-joining metal or plastics parts 2, 2, at least one insert 1 which is harder than the material of at least one of the parts 2 is located between the parts and the parts are moved towards one another under pressure so as to cause the insert to penetrate into an uninterrupted surface region of at least one part so that the insert is enclosed by the material of the one part to anchor it in the material. The insert 1 is a coil, e.g. of copper when the parts are aluminium plates, and it may be wound around a wire 4 or a strip. The plates may be displaced laterally when under pressure so as to deform the coil thereby providing improved anchorage for the coil, Fig. 4 (not shown). The insert may alternatively comprise a bar (6), Fig. 10 (not shown), of cruciform cross-section, a tongued strip (7), Fig. 14 (not shown), or a plurality of balls. The inserts may be formed as a grid or may be arranged in a sinuous pattern for securing tubular electrical heating elements to, e.g. frying pans, saucepans, tanks, kettles or hot plates, or for securing evaporator tubes in refrigerators. In the manufacture of a saucepan, Fig. 24 (not shown), a heating coil (21) is welded to the bottom of the saucepan, which is of stainless steel, while an aluminium plate (22) is pressed onto the coil until it is in contact with the saucepan. The sole plate of an electric iron is made by welding a number of balls (31), Fig. 31 (not shown), to a nickel-chrome steel plate (30) and pressing a heating element (32) and the steel plate (30) on to opposite faces of an aluminium plate (33) to secure them to it. The heating element is held on the plate (33) by wire coils (34) with cores (35) which become embedded in the plate and cover of the element, Fig. 29 (not shown). A heating element is similarly secured to the base of an electric kettle, Fig. 31 (not shown), or to the base of a tank, Fig. 34 (not shown). Longitudinally jointed pipes may have their seams secured by coils (59), (63), (67), (71), Figs. 39-42 (not shown). A can lid 73, Fig. 43, is secured to a can body 72 by a wire coil 75 and a ring 77 may be attached to the coil to assist in opening the can.
