Abstract

1478008 Removing oil from beaches INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 4 Dec 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 41863/73 Heading C5D Oil-based contamination is removed from a surface, such as a beach, by a process which comprises internally mixing a stream of water with a dispersant composition comprising a solution or suspension in an organic solvent of one or more surface active agents which is a gelling agent (defined), applying the mixture to the surface and causing or permitting rinsing of the surface to remove the mixture and contamination. The water and dispersant may be intimately mixed, in a volume ratio of 2 : 3, and subsequently sprayed on the surface. The water may be sea water. The gelling agent may be an octyl or nonyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate, monopalmitate ester of polyethyoxylated sorbitan, a carboxy vinyl polymer or polyethoxylated cetyl/stearyl alcohol. The organic solvent may be kerosene. The spray apparatus may be a modified oxyacetylene welding torch.
