Abstract

1477683 Ignition systems ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 31 July 1974 [1 Aug 1973] 33726/74 Heading F1B An ignition system comprises a primary ignition circuit including the ignition coil primary winding 1 and a second ignition circuit including a capacitor 2, both circuits being inductively coupled to the ignition coil secondary winding, and a monitoring circuit 4 adapted to monitor the insulation resistance R of a spark plug 19 to render the second ignition circuit operative in addition, or as shown, as an alternative to the primary ignition circuit when the insulation resistance falls below a predetermined value, e.g. due to soiling of the spark plug. As shown, the primary ignition circuit is controlled by a circuit breaker 21 controlling the base current of a switching transistor 11. The breaker similarly controls a thyristor 14 in the second ignition circuit. A voltage convertor 12 ensures that the capacitor is charged to 500 volts. The monitory circuit is effective automatically to close a switch 40 in the second circuit to render it operative when the insulation resistance falls below the predetermined value. A switch 41 may be provided in the primary ignition circuit to open automatically when switch 40 closes. The bridging switches 51, 52 are closed at engine starting e.g. by being actuated in dependence on actuation of the engine starter switch, to ensure that both circuits are operative at starting.
