Abstract

1477639 X-ray intensifying screens AGFAGEVAERT 7 Aug 1974 [11 March 1974] 10729/74 Heading H5R The rapid non-darkroom processing advantages of fine grain low-Ag halide emulsions together with adequate sensitivity to X-rays are achieved by the combination of single or double sided film with single or double separate or integral intensifying screens fluorescing strongly between 400 and 500 nm wavelength, comprising LaOCl and/or OBr with halogens near atoichiometric, activated by rare earths. For example an AgBr (with 1À5% molar AgI) emulsion with conventional additives coated on both sides of a polymer support at equivalent of 6 g./m.<SP>2</SP> AgNO 3 per side, having a covering power of 60 (max. optical density/g. per dm. of developed Ag), together with a screen on each side comprising LaOBr with 0À002 mole Tb<SP>3+</SP> and 0À0005 mole Yb (Yb to reduce after-glow), in an 82À1% w./w. solids emulsion containing 350 g./m.<SP>2</SP> of phosphor on a polymer support, was exposed to 80 kV X-rays filtered through 6 mm. Al with a Pb test grid. Compared with the same emulsion combined with two prior art screens (phosphors Eu activated BaSO 4 -SrSO 4 and CaWO 4 respectively) the combination described was faster than the prior art and comparable in resolution (square wave response factor). To prevent cross-over blurring (light from screen reaching opposite emulsion) the emulsion support or a layer on it may contain a dye to transmit not more than 30% of the 400-500 nm light, removed or decolorized by the processing baths. Sensitizing dyes for 400-500 nm light may be added to the Ag emulsion together with conventional additives. Reference is made to Specifications 1,319,569 and 1,247,602.
