Abstract
1477148 Torque motors LUCAS INDUSTRIES Ltd 12 Aug 1974 [5 Sept 1973] 41720/73 Heading H2A In a torque motor wherein a pivotally mounted permanent magnet 16 has two faces 18a, 19a lying adjacent two faces 12a, 13a of a pair of polepieces 12, 13 of a yoke 10, thereby forming two air gaps 20, 21, a coil 22 on the yoke may be energized to subject the magnet 16 to a torque which depends on the magnitude and direction of the current in the coil. The faces 12a, 13a, 18a, 19b are located on arcuate surfaces which are concentric with the pivot axis 15 of the magnet 16, and as a consequence the lengths of the air gaps 20, 21 remain constant, and the rate of increase of reluctance of one gap is the same as the rate of decrease of reluctance of the other gap as the magnet 16 rotates. For each direction of current flow in the coil 22, the flux C, D provided by the coil 22 enhances the flux A, B provided by the magnet 16 in one gap, and opposes it in the other.
