Abstract

1476759 Induction heating ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 30 Sept 1974 [1 Oct 1973] 42306/74 Heading H5H A stud fastener 20 with a heat activatable adhesive layer 26 on its base 24 is secured to a workpiece 28 by the induction heater 10 which comprises a coil 18 mounted on the bight 12 of a U-shaped core, the end surfaces 16 of whose legs 14 are in a common plane lying at an acute angle to the longitudinal axes of the legs 14. This enables the legs 14 to be placed on either side of a stud 22 no matter how long it may be, so that flux from the core passes between the legs 14 through the adhesive 26 beneath the stud 22 and thus causes the fastener 20 to be adhered to the workpiece 28. The core is made by winding magnetic strip on a rectangular mandrel and severing the closed loop formed along two sides at an angle of 30 degrees to form two U-shaped cores.
