Abstract

1475340 Electroconductive coatings CALGON CORP 11 Nov 1974 [16 Nov 1973] 48639/74 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] Electroconductive coatings include a complex formed between (a) a water-soluble strongly cationic homo- or co-opolymer of dimefhyl diallyl ammonium chloride and (b) a water-soluble weakly anionic material having a pK value of at least 3 which is maleic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, or a homo- or copolymer of acrylic acid or maleic acid, the molar ratio of (b) to (a) being in the range 0.05:1 to 1:1. Exemplified (a) components are poly(dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride), and dimethyl diallyl ammonium chloride/diacetone acrylamide copolymer. Exemplified (b) components are polyacrylic acid, hydrolysed maleic anhydride/styrene copolymer, succinic acid and and glutaric acid. The coatings may be applied to paper and synthetic polymers by conventional mehods. Examples describe the coating of rosin-sized raw paper with compositions of a complex as above together with clay, hydroxyethylated starch and water; and coating of "Mylar" (R.T.M.), polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene with compositions of a complex as above in water or methanol.
