Abstract

1386983 Polyolefin fibres for making paper CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 3 March 1972 [3 March 1971] 10186/72 Heading D2B Polyolefin fibres having improved water dispersibility and suitable for making paper comprise polyolefin fibres having a surface area greater than 1 square metre/gram and containing an amount of a hydrophilic colloidal polymeric additive selected from anionic-cationic colloidal complexes and starch sufficient to impart to the mass of fibres a "dispersibility index" in water of less than 300. The amount of additive is normally in the range from 0.1-20% by wt of the fibres. The anionic-cationic colloidal complex may be formed from any combination of water soluble anionic and cationic polymeric materials which will form a hydrophilic colloidal suspension in water. Specified anionic polymers are ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer, carboxymethyl cellulose, anionic urea-formaldehyde, and polyacrylic acid. Exemplified cationic polymers are polyethylene imine, cationic melamine - formaldehyde, cationic urea-formaldehyde, polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyamide-epichlorohydrin, and cationic guar gum. The starch may be a cationic starch. The fibres may be converted to sheet form by a papermaking process.
