Abstract
1475268 Travelling-wave tubes VARIAN ASSOCIATES Inc 6 June 1975 [13 June 1974] 24513/75 Heading H1D The normal positive dispersion of a travelling-wave tube helix; supported from a metal envelope 9 by electrically insulative but thermally conductive rods 11, is rendered less positive, or is rendered negative, by interposing between the helix and the envelope a plurality of axially extending, arcuate, dielectric members 26, radially spaced from the helix, and formed either of alumina ceramic (Fig. 11, not shown) or, as shown, of quartz having arrays of electrically conductive stripes 27 formed on their inner surface e.g. by photoetching a copperplated molybdenum layer. Prior art arrangements in which an array of axially extending fine wires is mounted around the helix (Fig. 4 not shown), or a plurality of axially extending conductive vanes project from the envelope towards the helix (Fig. 5, not shown), or the helix is supported in a glass envelope by inwardly projecting flutes formed in the envelope wall (Fig. 6, not shown), are referred to.
