Abstract
1475137 Sheet forming of tubes CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 6 Aug 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 34625/74 Heading B5A A tyre inner tube is formed from elastomeric sheet material by vacuum forming the material on to a toroidal core 10, which may be porous, so that it extends slightly beyond the midcircumferential plane of the core, removing surplus sheet material, inverting the core with the formed tubular part and repeating the process to apply a second part of the tube and then bonding the overlapping edges of the tube parts together; the core is removed by disintegration and removal from an opening in the tube. The sheet is supplied from a roll 30, and passes over a ring 16 surrounding the core and which, together with a base plate 18, support plate 12 and perforated plate 24 provide a chamber 33 to which a vacuum is applied. A cutter 40 with cutting members 42, 44 is lowered to remove surplus material. The edges of the tubular parts are bonded together by rollers 58 on pivoted arms 54, 56 urged together by means 60 and driven about a shaft 50.
