Abstract

1474834 Anti-theft devices D R PENDER 5 Aug 1975 32616/75 Heading B7J [Also in Division E2] An anti-theft locking means for a bicycle or the like comprises a high strength tubular flexible tether 14 secured at one end to a casing 11 housing a conventional key operated lock 12 and securable by a metal strip 35 to a bicycle frame bar 10, the other end of the tether 14 carrying two latch plate members 23 mounted in a sleeve 17 so as to be normally outwardly urged by leaf springs 22, radially through slots 24 in the sleeve, whereby the latch members can be plugged into an aperture 42 in an anchor post 15 whereafter the tether is secured to the post by the outward movement of the latch plates 23. The plates 23 are retractable, whereby the tether can be released from the post, by means of a hollow bullet like camming member 26 slidable over the sleeve 17 by a wire 28 passing through the sleeve 17 and the tether 14 and connected to an arm 33 of the lock unit which arm is rotatable by a key. After release of the latch plates 23 from the post 15 the latch end of the tether resumes the position of the parts shown in Fig. 3 by the action of a spring 30 when the key is removed from the lock unit 12, whereafter the latch end of the tether may be carried in a bracket 43 on the casing 11 in readiness for further use. Instead of the outer end of the tether being plugged into an aperture in the post 15, the tether may be passed round the post and the end plugged into a socket 41 in the casing. Alternatively the tether may be passed through a wheel of the bicycle and then locked to the casing 11. A compression spring 47 surrounds the sleeve 17 between a shoulder 18 thereon and the outer end of the sleeve. When the latch plots 23 are retracted the spring 47 forces the sleeve and camming member 26, then overlying the plates, out of the aperture in the post or the socket 41 in the casing 11 according to the mode of tethering the bicycle.
