1474692 Production of furoxans IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 14 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 24092/73 Heading C2C A process for the production of furoxans having the formula comprises treating a vicinal nitro oxime of the formula wherein A and B are hydrogen atoms or substituent groups provided that both do not simultaneously represent hydrogen, and X is a monocyclic or polycyclic ring structure fused to the carbon atoms which will eventually form part of the furoxan ring, with sulphur trioxide in a mutual solvent for the reactants. Suitably, the solvent is dimethylformamide or dioxan and the reaction is conducted at a temperature of from 0‹ to 40‹ C.
