Abstract

1474560 Speculums MEDSPECS Inc 29 April 1974 [1 May 1973] 18667/74 Heading A5R A speculum comprises first 10 and second 12 members, each having an elongated blade with a convex outer surface, and a hinge 16 connecting the first and second members, the hinge having a portion of flexible material for permitting relative pivotal movement of the blades between open and closed positions about an axis directed transversely of the longitudinal axes of the blades, the connecting means being integral with at least one of the members the pivoting action being provided by flexing of the material of the hinge. The hinge may comprise a groove 42 which allows pivoting of blade 14 of member 10 about an axis 17, and hinge 16 has a portion 18 which has pins formed integrally on its lower surface which engage sockets in the member 12. Slots 26 are formed in a handle portion 24 of the member 10 and frictionally engage two weblike parts 38 of a handle portion 40 of the member 12, so that friction between parts 38 and the handle portion 24 holds the blades 14, 36 spread apart. It is stated that one web 38 and one slot in handle portion 24 may also be used for this purpose. In a second embodiment, Figures 7 to 9 (not shown), the hinge comprises pins which are formed integrally with the member 12, and which fit sockets in the member 10, flexion being achieved by providing the pins with regions of reduced diameter. In a third embodiment, Figures 10 to 12 (not shown), the side edges of the blades are connected by flexible webs which provide the hinge. In this embodiment there is one web-like member which has teeth along its arcuate edge, which are engaged by a protuberance on the other member which locks the device in an open position. The speculum is preferably produced from a plastics material.
