Abstract

1474536 Halogenated, partially hydrogenated block copolymers SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ BV 29 July 1974 [30 July 1973] 33321/74 Heading C3P A block copolymer, containing at least one polymer block of an alkenyl aromatic hydrocarbon polymer block and at least one butadiene polymer block containing 20 to 60% of its unsaturation as 1,2-units, is partially hydrogenated so that at least 50% of the 1,2-units and no more than 50% of the 1,4-units are saturated, and then halogenated. In the examples, a poly- (styrene - 6 - butadiene - b - styrene) copolymer is hydrogenated under mild conditions using nickel acetylacetonate and triethylaluminium and in solution in cyclohexane, followed by halogenation in the dark with chlorine gas or bromine dissolved in CCl 4 . The block copolymers obtained were compounded with additives usual for P.V.C. compositions and its fire resistant properties highlighted. Typical additives include chlorinated paraffin wax, polystyrene, lead phthalate, Sb 2 O 3 , P.V.C., tricresyl phosphate, TiO 2 , naphthenic oil, chlorinated polyethylene and an organic tin mercaptide.
