Abstract

1474140 Powder coating compositions HOECHST AG 10 April 1975 [11 April 1974] 14845/75 Heading C3B A powder coating composition comprises: (I) an oligomeric ester or a polyester containing free OH groups but substantially no free COOH groups; (II) a compound containing at least 2 epoxy groups; and (III) a nitrogenous base or a thermally decomposable salt thereof. I may be prepared from a dito tetra-carboxylic acid and a dito tetra-hydric alcohol. Minor amounts of monocarboxylic acids and/or monohydric alcohols may also be present. Esters of terephthalic acid are preferred. II may be triglycidyl isocyanurate, an epoxy novolac resin, a polyglycidyl ether of a polyhydric phenol or a cycloaliphatic epoxy resin. III may be a secondary or tertiary amine or a quaternary ammonium salt or hydroxide. Examples used are dimethylbenzylamine and tris - (dimethylaminomethyl)phenol. The compositions may contain 5-30% by wt. of II and 0À2-4% by wt. of III, both relative to the wt. of I. The compositions may be prepared by melting a mixture of I, II and III, e.g. at 80- 130‹ C., solidifying and comminuting. Conventional fillers, pigments and levelling agents may also be present.
