Abstract

1474132 Photographic material containing blocked development restrainer EASTMAN KODAK CO 5 June 1974 [5 June 1973] 24959/74 Heading G2C A photographic material comprises a support and (i) at least one layer thereon containing a silver halide emulsion and/or (ii) an image-receiving layer, and also comprising a blocked development restrainer of the formula:- where Z completes a non-metallic 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring which may be substituted or fused with another ring, the heterocyclic ring, taken together with the S atom shown, providing a silver halide development restrainer upon cleavage from the remainder of the molecule. The heterocyclic ring may be a tetrazole, triazole, imidazole, benzimidazole, pyrimidine, benzoxazole or benzothiazole. The only specified blocked development restrainer is 1-phenyl-5-(#-cyanoethylthio)-tetrazole. The silver halide material may contain a dye image providing material e.g. an oxichromic compound (see Ex 1-3). Examples 4 and 5 illustrate photographic materials containing negative silver halide emulsions having associated therewith positive-working, initially immobile, dye-releasing compounds which undergo a nucleophilic displacement reaction to release a diffusible dye in the undeveloped areas. The blocked development restrainer is preferably incorporated in a silver halide emulsion layer. The photographic material may be a colour diffusion transfer film unit (see Ex 2, 3 and 5). Generally, the release of the development restrainer is achieved by contact with alkali, but it is possible to aid or achieve cleavage by elevating the temperature.
