Abstract
1473705 Centrifugal separators INSTRUM- ENTATION LABORATORY 26 June 1974 [5 July 1973] 28378/74 Heading B2P [Also in Division G1] A blood analysis system comprises a plasma analysis unit which includes a cuvette 224, a separation apparatus 12 for separating plasma from whole blood, a first conduit 202, 60 for supplying whole blood to the separation apparatus and a second conduit 62, 214, 218, 222 for transferring plasma from the separation apparatus to the analysis cell 224 for analysis. Reagent may be introduced into cell 224 (by means not shown) before the plasma is transferred to the cell and the measurement signal from photosensor 230 may be processed by control system 232 and an output displayed at 236. The separation apparatus in the embodiment shown comprises (Fig. 1) a rotor which may be rotated by permanent split capacitor motor 24 and belt 30, within the rotor separation chamber structure which as shown comprises chambers 122, 124 (or in another embodiment in which the rotor is driven by a flexible shaft, a single chamber), the separation chamber structure being offset from the rotor axis, also within the rotor second chamber structure 120, discharge port structure 104, 106 located adjacent the lower position of the separation chamber structure on the side remote from the rotor axis restriction structure 130 between the separation chamber structure and the second chamber structure, an upper portion of the separation chamber structure being adjacent the restriction structure and a lower portion being spaced further from the rotor axis than the upper portion, the restriction structure being adapted to retain a first portion of the separated material in the separation chamber structure while permitting a second portion (e.g. the plasma) to flow from the separation chamber structure into the second chamber structure, valve structure 110, 158 for normally closing the discharge port structure and second port structure 54 for introducing material into and removing material from the second chamber structure. The valve structures each comprise a seal disc (154) of resilient material pressed in the closed position of the valve against an open end of the discharge port by a glass actuating sphere (158) by means of a flat on a cylindrical glass filled nylon pin 110, both nylon pins being engaged by a steel actuator disc 170 for vertical movement by actuator 182 to move the valves between their open and closed positions.
