Furnace gases and the like, mixing steam with. -Apparatus for generating a mixture of steam and combustion products under pressure for driving turbines or reciprocating engines, comprises means for supplying liquid fuel to a water jacketted combustion chamber 17 consisting of a fuelsupply receiver fuel from which is fed by a piston 4 into a cylinder 5, through a non-return valve 6. The cylinder 5 is provided with a piston 7 acted on by a spring 9 so that excess liquid may be returned through the pipe 8 to the reservoir 1. Fuel from the cylinder 5 is forced into the combustion chamber 17 by a pump plunger 12 against a depending vaporizer or disperser 18 which also acts as a non-return valve. The plunger 12 is operated by a tapering cam 13 which may be adjusted on the shaft 16 to vary the stroke of the plunger. Compressed air is fed to the combustion chamber by a pipe 30 supplied from a cylinder 26 which is provided with ports 36 controlled by a valve 35 to vary the supply of compressed air. After each explosion in the combustion chamber 17, a valve 21 opens to admit the combustion products to a reservoir 22 communicating by a pipe 23 with the steam space in the casing 20. The mixed combustion products and steam may be led direct to an engine or to a cleansing vessel 38, Fig. 3, having an inlet pipe 24, terminating in a distributor 37, and an outlet pipe 39. The combustion may be started by a piece of metal 25, which may be heated and screwed into the combustion chamber which is lined with refractory material.
