1473315 Freeze-dried compositions W J SMITH 10 June 1974 [13 March 1973] 12154/73 Heading A5B Soluble pharmaceutical compositions are prepared by freeze-drying an aqueous solution of a pharmaceutically active ingredient, a volatile essential oil flavorant and a watersoluble edible carbohydrate. The pharmaceutically active ingredient e.g. calcium aspirin (prepared in situ by reacting calcium carbonate and aspirin in water), the flavorant e.g. lemon oil, and the carbohydrate which is preferably a mixture of starch hydrolysate (dextrose equivalent 5 to 30) and sucrose or lactose, are mixed in aqueous solution, filtered and freeze dried to give a water-soluble granular product. The composition may also contain buffers, antacids and silicones. A carbohydrate gum e.g. gum arabic, may be used in place of the starch hydrolysate.
