Abstract

1473229 Steering lock HANS KOLB KG 7 Nov 1974 [8 Nov 1973 28 March 1974] 48154/74 Heading E2A A steering lock for motor vehicles has a sliding bolt 8 loaded by spring 7 in the locking direction and a cylinder lock 2, the rotatable barrel 3 of which is secured to a control cam 4 for rotation therewith so that, on rotation of the barrel, the bolt is moved from its locking position to its unlocking position and retained there by cam 4 until withdrawal of key 11 upon which the cam 4 is axially displaceable to release the bolt, the barrel 3 being axially fixed and the cam 4 and/or barrel 3 having a movable coupling member 15 to control the axial movement of the cam on key withdrawal. As shown, cam 4 has an eccentric portion 5 and a bar 6 operating ignition switch 9 and having a slot for the passage of bolt 8. Cam 4 is urged in the direction of key withdrawal by spring 19 and is coupled to barrel 3 by axial pins 17. Bolt 8 has a spring loaded axially movable detent pin 20. The coupling member 15 is pivoted on pins 23 which are slidable in grooves 24 in the side walls of a slot 22 in cam 4, one end 28 of the member 15 co-operating with an internal annular groove 29 in housing 1 and the other end 30 co-operating with the tip 16 of key 11. In Fig. 1, cam 4 is retained in its rearmost position by member 15 against spring 19, the key tip 16 holding member 15 in groove 29. If key 11 is withdrawn, member 15 is released and cam 4 urged forwardly, member 15 moving upwardly out of groove 29 against spring 25. Detent pin 20 is released and bolt 8 moved to its projecting, locking position by spring 7 (Fig. 2, not shown). Upon insertion of the key, its tip 16 engages end 30 of member 15 which pivots about pins 23, (Fig. 3, not shown). If key 11, barrel 3 and cam 4 are rotated, the control surfaces. 21 on housing 2 move cam 4 to its rearward position, the eccentric portion 5 engaging arm 31 to withdraw the bolt 8 to its unlocked position. End 28 of member 15 enters groove 29 and end 30 thereof slips under tip 16 of key 11 as in Fig. 1. The control cam 4 may be spring-loaded either in the direction of key withdrawal or opposite thereto. The coupling member 15 may be a lever and/or a slide or a plate-shaped tumbler and may be movable in the control cam 4 and/or the barrel 3.
