Abstract

1473099 Centrifugal separator KELBURN ENG CO Ltd W P MACFARLANE and J F HARVIE 5 Aug 1974 [10 May 1973] 22309/ 73 Heading B2P A separator for removing solid and liquid contaminants from gaseous flows comprises an inlet duct 3 leading to a deflector 12 which is arranged to divide gaseous flow from the duct 3 into several streams to which the deflector imparts a vortical motion in such a way that the flow passes tangentially into a chamber 17 of circular cross-section leading to an outlet duct 4 of the separator, part of the circumferential extent of the chamber wall having a volute depression 19 on its inner surface leading into an escape opening which extends across the full width of the depression and which provides a passage out through the chamber wall, at least partially intermediate the deflector 12 and the outlet duct 4, the opening allowing exit of solid or liquid contaminants which are removed from the flow by the centrifugal action of the vortical motion of the flow on the contaminants. The separator may be used for receiving solids and water from steam flowing from a boiler, connected to the duct 3, to a turbine, connected to the duct 4. The exit opening for the contaminants lead to an escape duct 5 to which a pipe can be secured to act as a collector vessel for separated solids or water A float or bucket automatic steam trap may be connected to the base of the pipe for the discharge of separated water. The deflector 12 consists of a frusto-conical hub portion 13 provided with outwardly projecting vanes 15 defining passages 16 which narrow in the direction of flow.
