Abstract

1472979 Printing plates WR GRACE & CO 25 April 1975 [10 April 1974] 16027/74 Heading G2A A relief image is produced by applying a coating of photocurable material to a web, feeding the coated web stepwise or continuously to an imagewise exposure zone, and developing the image by removing the unexposed coating from the web. The coated web may be exposed to U.V. radiation through a transparency or to an electronically controlled laser or electron beam. As shown, a primed anodized aluminium web is passed under coating means including a fluorescent lamp for preactivation of the photocurable material and over temperature-controlled infrared lamps to the nip between rollers 5 from where it is passed together with a negative-bearing adhesive-coated transparent web to an imagewise exposure station where ionized air is blown through a gap between the transparency and the photocurable material. Development is then effected by an air knife while the web is held by a heated metal plate and the developed web is passed through a nip together with a web of absorbent paper and over a postexposure station after which it is cut and stacked. Apart from manual feeding of negatives in succession, sensed by a photo-cell, operation is automatic.
