Abstract
1472705 Separating refuse; impact pulverizers, comminuting refuse BAUER BROS CO 28 Jan 1975 [31 Jan 1974] 3632/75 Headings B2A and B2H An apparatus for separating a mixture of various types of solids e.g. refuse, into its components comprises a housing defining a plurality of intercommunicating chambers and a rotatable shaft 30 extending through the housing. The mixture is fed through a hopper 92 into the first chamber 42 where it is mixed with heated air supplied by a conduit (18) and comes into contact with sprirally arranged lugs 68 on the rotating shaft 30. The lugs fling the solids outwardly so that the heaviest of them e.g. fragments of metal, pass through an opening 98 at the top of the chamber 42 into an annular chamber 96 from which they may be discharged via a door 104 to a conveyor 106. The lighter solids pass from the chamber 42 to a chamber 52 having a roughened wall surface 53 and a perforate wall 109. A rotating cutter-beater assembly 76 comprising six spokes 78 each of which has attached to its end a triangular cutter element 80 and a beater bar 82, pulverises the friable plastics and glass materials in the chamber 52 until they are small enough to pass through the perforate wall 109 to a conveyor 112. Paper- and cardboard products are shredded and pass from the chamber 52 to a chamber 54 via an annular opening defined by the outer edge of a baffle 86 and a projected edge of the wall 56 of the chamber 54. Fibrous material which passes through the perforate wall 109 is sucked into the chamber 54 along a duct 114 by a fan 90 which draws a stream of air through the chambers 42, 52 and 54. Ozone or chlorine may be introduced into the chamber 54 through a nozzle 121. The fibrous material leaves the housing through a conduit 16 and is removed from the air stream in a cyclone (12). The air is directed back to the inlet to the chamber 42 along a conduit (18) Fig. 1 (not shown).
