Abstract

1472613 Wheelchairs R BENOIT and A MAIRET 1 Oct 1974 [2 Oct 1973] 42485/74 Heading B7H An indoor wheelchair 1 can, simply by moving it and by operating controls within reach of the occupant, be coupled to a device 2 which includes a steerable wheel 10 driven by an engine 14. The coupled combination is suitable for use on the road. To couple the wheelchair and drive device together, the device is stood, supported by its wheel 10 and by legs 36, and the wheelchair is moved so that its footrest support enters the gap between tubes 35 housing the legs 36. Ramps 30 on the footrest support at each side of the chair engage and raise pinholders 33 into depressions 27. The occupant can then lock the chair and drive device together by pushing pins 39 into holes 28. The occupant can then raise legs 36 from the ground and turn levers 41 so that cams 40 engage slots 18<SP>1</SP> in the chair arms to lift the front wheels 8 of the chair clear of the ground. Finally, road brake mechanisms, Fig. 3 (not shown), can be swung about the tubes 35 and locked into positions in which brake shoes are able to co-operate with the rear wheels 6 and 7 of the chair.
