Abstract

1472078 Relief patterned cellular articles EIWA CHEMICAL INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 23 Oct 1974 45920/74 Heading C3C [Also in Division G2] Relief patterns on cellular polymeric articles are produced by exposing a thermoplastic polymer containing azodicarbonamide to the pattern using light of wavelengths of 100 to 500 n.m. to inactivate the azodicarbonamide and then heating the article to above the decomposition temperature of the azodicarbonamide to release gases therefrom and produce the relief pattern. Heating is preferably between 180‹ and 220‹ C. In the examples polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin or ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer with optionally plasticizers, e.g. dioctyl phthalate, stabilizers, e.g. Cd-Ba complex salts or dicumyl peroxide were mixed with azodicarbonamide, formed into sheets which were printed or covered with a pattern, irradiated with ultra-violet light and then heated in ovens or a salt bath to form embossed expanded sheets.
