Abstract

1472066 Photo-electric position control BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 26 June 1974 [28 June 1973 10 July 1973] 30931/73 and 32913/73 Heading H4D The Specification describes several embodiments of an apparatus which produces output signals from an arrangement of photo-cells 11, 61, mounted within a box 1, 51, which signals are dependent on the position, in orthogonal co-ordinates, of a joystick 4, 56, which in the embodiment of Fig. 1 is supported by a rubber diaphragm 3, and is provided with a light source, by transmitting light from a light emitting diode (L.E.D.) 7 through optical fibre bundle 8, which light emerges on the bottom of the joystick, and impinges on a quadrant arrangement of photo-cells 11. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the joystick is mounted more rigidly on a thick rubber diaphragm (18) and is moved, and the light beam thereby deflected by pressure on a button (22). In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, the joystick 56 is pivotally mounted at 57 on a gimbal 52 which in turn is pivotally mounted on a box 51 on an axis 55 orthogonal to axis 57. The end 64 of joystick 56 is polished and reflects light from L.E.D. 63 on to an elongate array of photo-cells 62 in accordance with the joystick position on axis 57. The support member 52 similarly reflects light from diode 68 on to detector array 66 arranged orthogonally to array 62 and providing signals indicative of the joystick position on axis 55. In a fourth embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), the joystick (75) is mounted on a similar gimbal support, but so arranged that light from diodes (83, 84) passes through an optical grating, arranged to produce moirÚ fringes in accordance with the position of the control member relative to one axis, and on to a set of photodetectors (81, 82), a similar arrangement being used for the orthogonal axial position of the joystick. The device may be used for controlling the direction of flight of a guided missile.
