Abstract
1471915 Continuous casting JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORP 28 Feb 1974 [1 March 1973] 9175/74 Heading B3F Two layers of material 2 such as steel, Cu or Al, are formed, one on a drum surface 4 and the other on the inner surface of a ring 3 which rotates around the drum in the same direction as the drum rotates, the layers being formed by the surfaces contacting molten material 2; the layers then contact each other in the gap between the surfaces so that adjacent portions are joined together to form a single cast strip 1, the drum being rotated to have an outer surface speed which is less than the inner surface speed of the ring, but controlled so that the radially outermost surface of the drum layer travels faster than the innermost surface of the ring layer; when the layers are brought into contact. The basic drive for the large ring 3 and drum 4 is provided by a motor 18 through a spur gear 13. While a spur gear 22 transmits a constant drive for the large ring 3, a spur gear 12 drives a shaft 11 of a unit 10 consisting of a steplessly variable drive and differential gearing system for varying the drive to the drum 4. The output speed of the unit 10 may be changed by an adjuster 33, e.g. to compensate for changes in strip thickness, and the ratio of drum speed to ring speed may be made to vary automatically with the thickness. The pool of molten metal 2 is fed by a tundish 34.
