Abstract

1313036 Casting composite shafts STAHLUND ROHRENWERK REISHOLZ GmbH 13 Aug 1971 [14 Aug 1970 19 Oct 1970] 38204/71 Heading B3F A method of casting metal on to the surface of a metal shaft 1 comprises continuously forming molten metal by electroslag remelting of one or more electrodes 2 in a mould 6, at least one wall of the mould being formed by the surface of the shaft 1, and rotating the shaft about its axis so that the molten metal solidifies on the surface of the shaft 1 whilst it is in the mould and the solidified metal is withdrawn continuously from the mould integral with the shaft 1. After the solidified metal has emerged from the mould it may be acted on by a pressure roller (8) and tested ultrasonically for defects. The metal may be cast on to the shaft as a continuous helical band, as a single band to form a flange, as a plurality of separate bands to form a plurality of flanges, or as a series of bands in contact with one another so as to cover a portion or the whole of the shaft surface. The whole may be covered during one revolution of the shaft by using a mould which extends for the whole length of the shaft. More than one layer may be applied to the shaft. The mould may be made of copper and may consist of two members hinged together to facilitate the casting of the final part of a band, Fig. 9 (not shown).
