Abstract

1471865 Dispensing measured quantities of liquid UNILEVER Ltd 8 April 1974 [6 April 1973] 16735/73 Heading B8N A device for dispensing liquids for bacteriological sampling comprises a reservoir 2 for the liquid, and a dispenser 9 connected to the reservoir via a conduit 3 for liquid, means for applying pressure within the reservoir to three liquid therefrom via the conduit 3 into the dispenser 9, control means for controlling the level to which the dispenser is filled, and dispensing control means for controlling dispensation of a measured quantity of liquid from the dispenser, the reservoir and dispenser being detachable for separate sterilization and the control means and dispensing control means being in the form of externally applied clamps 7, 8 which flatten a flexible pipe coupling. As described the reservoir 2 is a bottle supported in a base unit 1 on which the dispenser body 9 is detachably secured by clips 14. In operation a vibrating diaphragm air pump 11 supplies air to the bottle 2 via a conduit 4, connecting unit 5 and bacterial filter 6. Liquid forced from the bottle passes to the dispenser body 9 via the conduit 3 and a dip tube 15 forming part thereof. When the liquid in the body 9 reaches the level 19 it closes an electrical circuit including an electrode 16 to send a signal to an amplifier 12 which closes a solenoid operated valve 7. A similar valve 8 in an outlet tube 10 of the body 9 is then opened to dispense the measured quantity of liquid, a breather tube 21 with a bacterial filter permitting this. The valves 7, 8 each comprise a wedge acting against a flexible tube portion and are interlocked so that valve 7 must be closed before valve 8 can be opened. The quantity of liquid dispensed may be varied by using electrode 17 instead of electrode 16. The body 9 may be detached by opening valves 7, 8, disconnecting unit 5, opening a plug 13 in the electrical line to amplifier 12, and removing the body from clips 14.
