1471750 Oil sump DAIMLER-BENZ AG 13 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 35644/74 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] An oil sump 10 comprises a central chamber 14 with apertures 23, 24 located in sidewalls 15, 16 of the chamber near its end-walls 18, 17, the endwalls being joined to the sump sidewalls 31, 32 by baffles 27, 28, thereby forming outer chambers 29, 30. A baffle 35 divides chamber 29 into sections 29a, 29b, which communicate via an opening 37, a similar baffle being located in chamber 30. Oil is extracted from the sump via a suction cage 21 by a pump 20. If oil within the sump surges toward end-wall 33, the oil within central chamber 14 rises against wall 17 and that within outer chamber 29 rises against wall 28; a pressure difference results owing to the greater length of chamber 29 over chamber 14 resulting in oil passing through aperture 24 into chamber 14 thereby reducing the chance of air entering the lubrication system. Similarly, oil enters chamber 14 via aperture 23 if it surges toward end-wall 34. Similarly, transverse surges result in a pressure difference preventing oil from leaving chamber 14 and may result in oil entering the chamber. These effects also occur if the sump is tilted about either a longitudinal or transverse axis.
