Abstract
1471551 Thiophosphates COURTAULDS Ltd 14 Aug 1974 [15 Aug 1973] 39559/73 Heading C2P [Also in Division C3] Flame-retardant compounds have the general formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 (which may be the same or different) each represent an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl group having from 4 to 6 carbon atoms and each substituted with 2 to 4 bromine atoms. These compounds may be prepared by reacting an appropriate brominated alcohol (or mixture of such alcohols) with phosphorus trichloride to give a phosphite triester which is reacted with elemental sulphur to give the corresponding thionophosphate. The example illustrates the preparation of tris-(2,3-dibromo- 1-butyl)thionophosphate by this route. Alternatively the thionophosphate can be prepared from an unsaturated alcohol and then brominated. The compounds are used to render regenerated cellulose flame-resistant and are incorporated into the viscose spinning solution.
