Abstract

1471497 Hexachloro-methanonaphthalene diol complexes UNIROYAL Inc 3 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 17742/75 Divided out of 1470717 Heading C2C The invention comprises molecular complexes having the formula wherein A is pyridine, pyridine oxide, pyridinium hydrochloride, pyridinium methobromide, pyridinium methoiodide, dimethylsulphoxide, or dimethylformamide and n is 1 or 2. They may be prepared by contacting a compound of formula with pyridine, pyridine together with thionyl chloride, pyridine oxide, dimethylsulphoxide or dimethylformamide, and in the case where pyridine is used, optionally thereafter contacting the product with hydrogen chloride, methyl bromide, or methyl iodide. The starting material of Formula II may be prepared by refluxing the corresponding methanonaphthalene - 5,8 - dione with pyridine and the dione may be prepared by reacting hexachlorocyclopentadiene with pbenzoquinone. The compounds of Formula I may he used as flame retardants for polymers.
