Abstract

1471441 Welding by pressure BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE AG 19 April 1974 [21 April 1973] 17345/74 Heading B3R In a method of welding a first sheet metal part, cable clip 1, to a second sheet metal part 2 by an electric arc pressure welding technique using a capacitor discharge current source, the first part is placed in a holder, welding current from the source is supplied through the holder and first part to the welding point, as shown pip or projection (21), and the first part is then pressed against the second part by means of a non- current-carrying member engaging the first part. Apparatus for carrying out the method may comprise a complete tool (not shown), or an attachment for a conventional welding tool, Figs. 1 and 2 in which the holder 4 (14) has spring-loaded reversible and replaceable clamping plates 16, 17 and is electrically and mechanically connected via carrier 10 to coupling momber 6 which can be screwed on to a welding gun electrode. Connected also to a member 6 via an insulating member 7 is a pressure-applying head 8 which may have a bore 23 for removing spatter. Other modifications of conventional welding tools are described: the tip of the electrode may be covered with an electrically non-conducting cap or be replaced by a tip insulated from the electrode shaft.
