Abstract
1,260,011. Welding by fusion. MOSKOVSKY ORDENA LENINA ENERGETICHESKY INSTITUT. 26 June, 1969, No. 32311/69. Heading B3R. In consumable wire electrode arc-welding or deposition, of metals such as aluminium and titanium, the arc is stabilized and parasitic arcing is eliminated by shielding current carrying parts of one of the electrodes (e.g. the wire) by a metal envelope having an electrical charge of the polarity of the charge of the other electrode (e.g. the workpiece). As shown, a workpiece 3 is mounted on a movable table in a vacuum chamber 1. The table and chamber are connected to negative. The electrode wire 5, fed by a head 4, is supplied through a tip 6 the electrical input thereto being connected to positive and insulated from the chamber by a sealing device 7. A metalshielding envelope 8 surrounding the wire and tip is connected to an additional, low-power, current source such that the envelope charge polarity is that of the workpiece. The voltage of the additional source may be varied. In an alternative embodiment, the additional source is dispensed with, the envelope, on arc striking, storing a charge of workpiece polarity.
