Abstract

The catalytic hydrogenation of crotonic aldehyde to butyric aldehyde and butyl alcohol is effected in the presence of water or steam, preferably that separated from the hydrogenated product. It is preferred to employ an excess of hydrogen in order to remove from the reaction chamber products arising from the decomposition of the crotonic aldehyde which occurs simultaneously with the hydrogenation; and the surplus hydrogen may be returned to the process after the recovery of the propylene contained therein. In place of pure crotonic aldehyde there may be used in this process the product of decomposition of alcohol, after the removal of the acetaldehyde. In carrying out the process the hydrogen and reacting materials may be passed in a cycle through the reaction chamber, or the reaction may be carried out in a closed pressure apparatus.ALSO:Propylene is recovered from the surplus hydrogen employed in the catalytic hydrogenation of crotonic aldehyde to butyric aldehyde and butyl alcohol.
